Training and school business manager qualifications

Support staff can develop the necessary skills and qualifications to become a school business manager by studying for the National College for School Leadership (NCSL) Certificate of School Business Management.

Experienced school business managers can develop their skills with the NCSL's Diploma of School Business Management.

The programmes

The Certificate of School Business Management is aimed at people who have worked in school administration or have recently been appointed as school business managers. It is also suitable for new entrants to the education profession or those who would like to join it.

The Diploma of School Business Management is aimed at experienced school business managers and has been developed to help them play a full part in their school's senior management team.

Each qualification takes six to 12 months, and is taught through a mixture of distance learning and short courses. The CSBM and DSBM also lead to the Institute of Administrative Management qualifications and membership. See the NCSL’s Bursar Development Programme website for more information.

Further training

Experienced bursars with the CSBM or DSBM can go on to join the National Bursars Association (NBA) Senior Bursar Development Programme. You could also work towards NVQ/SVQ levels 4 and 5 in management, other professional senior management qualifications, or a postgraduate qualification in educational business management.
