Career development

Professional development as a support staff member helps you contribute further to the school while developing your own career development opportunities. The delivery of extended services in schools could bring further significant career development opportunities for support staff. These opportunities may be in the front line delivery of services or in the coordination, direction or management of extended services.

The support staff career development framework has been created to help school leaders and support staff identify appropriate training and development. By showing progression opportunities within and across different roles it helps staff consider potential career pathways. The framework maps support staff job roles against currently available national training and qualifications commonly used by local authorities and schools.

The framework is not linked to local pay structures. Training programmes and qualifications are grouped by job roles according to the eight national qualifications framework (NQF) levels. This enables comparisons to be made and progression routes to be identified.

There are also links to relevant awarding bodies and organisations, who can provide further information on the training programmes or qualifications listed.

You can use the framework with the guidance to aid career development discussions with your line manager, and to identify training and qualifications that support your role. You can also contact your local authority to find out about training and development in your area.

They may have a training handbook or have produced a version of the framework listing locally available training opportunities. The skills4schools website, developed by UNISON, can also help you plan your training and development.
