The delivery of extended services in schools could bring significant career development opportunities for support staff. These opportunities may be in the front line delivery of services or in the co-ordination, direction or management of extended services.
Although members of support staff are under no obligation to extend their responsibilities to include the delivery of extended services, many will wish to take the opportunity to extend their contracted hours or to develop their careers in new directions. It is important that support staff have access to appropriate training opportunities and performance management which will allow them to take up these new opportunities.
Over the last few years support staff numbers have increased dramatically and there is improved recognition of the vital role which these staff members play in the running of our schools. With support staff often living close to the schools in which they work, they can also play a vital role in helping to identify the needs and priorities of pupils and of the community at large with regard to the extended schools agenda.
As with teachers, the direct impact which extended services have on pupils also brings real benefits to the work of support staff. When pupils have access to the range of core extended services, and arrive in school ready to learn, the work of all school staff is made easier.
