HLTA case study: handling emotional and behavioural difficulties

Barbara Ainsworth

School name:  Brookfield School, Poulton, Lancashire
Phase:  Special
Gender:  Boys

Working out what she did to meet all the different standards was the hardest part of Barbara's HLTA training. Barbara was already doing much of the work an HLTA should be doing and so achieving HLTA status seemed a natural progression for her.

Background

I became a teaching assistant after a friend of mine asked me to help out at her primary school. I got so interested in the work I took more on. I initially worked part-time with kids who had emotional and behavioural difficulties. Then I took on extra part-time work in a neighbouring school until a full-time job came up. I’ve been in the job for six years now.
