Induction and introductory training

Local authorities (LAs) run induction programmes for teaching assistants (TAs) and introductory programmes for support staff.

Teaching assistant induction

The teaching assistant induction programme is designed to inform TAs of the context in which they’ll be working and how they’ll support teachers.

The primary TA induction programme includes modules in literacy, mathematics, behaviour management, role and context, inclusion and special needs. Optional modules are also available in understanding how children learn, ICT in teaching and learning and English as an additional language.

The secondary TA induction programme includes modules in role and context, literacy, mathematics, behaviour management and inclusion. Optional modules are also available in English as an additional language and science.

Support staff introductory training

Support staff introductory training is not role specific and provides support staff with fundamental information about matters that are relevant to all who work in schools.

The support staff introductory training consists of modules in role and context, behaviour management, inclusion, the curriculum, English as an additional language and risk reflection.

For more information on these programmes please speak to your line manager. Programme material downloads are available from the link in the right-hand menu.
