About national occupational standards

National occupational standards (NOS) are a source of information to help schools make informed decisions about:

  • the demands of employment
  • good practice in employment
  • the coverage and focus of job roles
  • the structure and content of education and training and related qualifications.
There are standards to cover most roles in schools, such as teaching assistants, or cleaners, and can be used to support a variety of training and development activities. NOS also underpin national vocational qualifications (NVQs) and inform the development of other qualifications.
