The STL NOS replace the national occupational standards for teaching and classroom assistants. Although they still cover the teaching assistant role they have been broadened in scope to include new roles and responsibilities such as cover supervision exam invigilation and pastoral care and others.
School leaders will make decisions about skill mix requirements and design jobs to reflect the circumstances and needs of their school, its pupils and staff.
Although some of these roles may apply in other UK countries, this guidance only applies to schools in England. It identifies units that may be suitable for the different learning support roles these standards support.
Everyone supporting teaching and learning requires certain skills and knowledge. These have been incorporated into a set of "core" units of STL NOS. These should be viewed alongside the other units from STL NOS that may apply depending on the individual's role.
