You can work towards either an award or a certificate at level 2. For the award, you need to complete two mandatory units plus an optional unit. For the certificate, you are required to complete two mandatory and two optional units.

For example, a midday supervisor could take the two mandatory units plus the optional unit "Support children’s development" to achieve an award. To gain a certificate, a caretaker could take two optional units, such as “Make sure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety” and “Maintain site security”.

There are four groups of units:

  • mandatory units
  • information optional units (suitable for roles such as administrator, receptionist, PA, library assistant or data manager)
  • resources optional units (suitable for roles such as technician, IT support, learning resources or caretaker), and
  • support optional units (suitable for roles such as midday supervisor, SEN or learning support).
