SWiS Level 2

You can work towards either an award or a certificate at level 2. For the award, you need to complete two mandatory units plus an optional unit. For the certificate, you are required to complete two mandatory and two optional units.

For example, a midday supervisor could take the two mandatory units plus the optional unit "Support children’s physical development needs" to achieve an award. To gain a certificate, a caretaker could take two optional units, such as “Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety” and “Maintain site security”.

There are four groups of units:

  • mandatory units
  • information optional units (suitable for roles such as administrator, receptionist, PA, library assistant or data manager)
  • resources optional units (suitable for roles such as technician, IT support, learning resources or caretaker), and
  • support optional units (suitable for roles such as midday supervisor, SEN or learning support).

Mandatory units

  • Explore and respond to the needs of pupils
  • Explore school values, policies, roles and responsibilities

Information option units

  • Communicate information using telephone and fax
  • Prepare and print documents using a computer
  • Photocopy, present and distribute complex documents
  • Receive and assist visitors
  • Record, store and supply information using a paper-based filing system
  • Enter, retrieve and print data in a database
  • Produce documents from your own notes
  • Maintain the arrangement of material to facilitate retrieval
  • Issue and recover loan material
  • Identify and provide information and material required by users

Resources option units

  • Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
  • Help with classroom resources and records
  • Maintain the provision of materials, equipment and resources
  • Process requests to support learning
  • Controlling stocks of laboratory materials and equipment
  • Software installation and upgrade 2
  • Working with ICT hardware and equipment 2
  • Maintain resources
  • Maintain grounds
  • Maintain site security
  • Control the use of resources
  • Control the use of premises by customers and contractors
  • Operate a computer 2
  • Internet and intranets 2
  • E-mail 2
  • Bespoke/Specialist software 2
  • Clean toilets and washrooms manually
  • Clean carpets and soft furnishings

Support option units

  • Provide support for learning activities
  • Support literacy and numeracy activities in the classroom
  • Contribute to the support of student activities
  • Support children's physical development needs
  • Support children's social and emotional development
  • Technical advice and guidance 2
  • Remote support for products or services 2
  • System operation 2
  • Contribute to children and young people's healthy eating and personal hygiene
  • Support children and young people’s play
  • Contribute to health and safety in the play environment
  • Maintain food safety when storing, holding and serving food
  • Maintain food safety when storing, preparing and cooking food
  • Prepare, cook and finish healthier dishes
