You can work towards either an award or a certificate at level 2. For the award, you need to complete two mandatory units plus an optional unit. For the certificate, you are required to complete two mandatory and two optional units.
For example, a midday supervisor could take the two mandatory units plus the optional unit "Support children’s development" to achieve an award. To gain a certificate, a caretaker could take two optional units, such as “Make sure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety” and “Maintain site security”.
There are four groups of units:
- mandatory units
- information optional units (suitable for roles such as administrator, receptionist, PA, library assistant or data manager)
- resources optional units (suitable for roles such as technician, IT support, learning resources or caretaker), and
- support optional units (suitable for roles such as midday supervisor, SEN or learning support).

- Explore and respond to the needs of pupils
- Explore school values, policies, roles and responsibilities
Information option units
- Using a telephone system
- Produce documents
- Use office equipment
- Deal with visitors
- Store, retrieve and archive information
- Database software
- Organise and support meetings
- Maintain the arrangement of material to facilitate retrieval
- Issue and recover loan material
- Identify and provide information and material required by users
Resources option units
- Make sure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
- Help to keep children safe
- Prepare laboratory materials, equipment and resources
- Process requests to support learning
- Controlling stocks of laboratory materials and equipment
- Software installation and upgrade 2
- Working with ICT hardware and equipment 2
- Maintain laboratory and associate resources
- Maintain grounds
- Maintain site security
- Control the use of resources
- Control the use of premises by customers and contractors
- Operate a computer 2
- Internet and intranets 2
- E-mail 2
- Bespoke/Specialist software 2
- Clean toilets and washrooms manually
- Clean surfaces up to a max height of 4 metres
Support option units
- Provide support for learning activities
- Support literacy and numeracy activities
- Contribute to the support of student activities
- Support children's development
- Technical advice and guidance 2
- System operation 2
- Contribute to children and young people's healthy eating and personal hygiene
- Work with children and young people to create play spaces and support freely chosen self directed play
- Contribute to health, safety, security and welfare of children and young people using the play environment
- Maintain food safety when storing, holding and serving food
- Maintain food safety when storing, preparing and cooking food
- Prepare, cook and finish healthier dishes
- Contribute to maintaining pupils records
- Invigilate test and examination
