SWiS Level 3

To achieve an advanced award you need to complete two mandatory units. The advanced certificate requires two mandatory plus two optional units. For the advanced diploma you need to achieve two mandatory units plus four optional units.

There are five groups of units:

  • mandatory units
  • general option units (covering for example, team work, development, mentoring and assessment). Available at level 3 only
  • information option units (suitable for roles such as administrator, receptionist, PA, librarian or data manager)
  • resources option units (suitable for roles such as technician, IT support or caretaker), and
  • support option units (suitable for roles such as midday supervisor, after school coordinator, sports coach or learning support), and

Mandatory units

  • Understand and respond to the needs of children and young people
  • Support the ethos, policies and working practices of the school

General option units

  • Provide leadership for your team
  • Provide leadership in your area of responsibility
  • Develop productive working relationships with colleagues
  • Provide learning opportunities for colleagues
  • Reflect on and develop your practice
  • Liaise effectively with parents
  • Support competence achieved in the workplace

Information option units

  • Research, analyse and report information
  • Organise and coordinate events
  • Use IT to exchange information 3
  • Use specialist or bespoke software 3
  • Provide displays

Resources option units

  • Maintain a healthy, safe and productive work environment
  • Procure products and services
  • Provide technical support
  • Contribute to the safety, security and maintenance of the site
  • IT trouble-shooting for users 3
  • IT security for users 3

Support option units

  • Develop and promote positive relationships
  • Contribute to children's health and well being
  • Promote children's development
  • Protect and promote children’s rights
  • Contribute to the management of pupil behaviour
  • Establish and maintain relationships with individual pupils and groups
  • Support pupils during learning activities
  • Assist in preparing and maintaining the learning environment
  • Observe and report on pupil performance
  • Contribute to the planning and evaluation of learning activities
  • Maintain a supportive environment for users
  • Maintain food safety when storing, preparing and cooking food
  • Ensure appropriate food safety practices are followed whilst food is prepared, cooked and served
  • Prepare, cook and finish healthier dishes
  • Contribute to the development and introduction of recipes and menus
  • Control practices for handling payments
