Teaching and learning resources for initial teacher training tutors and trainees

Inclusive teaching and learning: resources to support professional dialogue between initial teacher training (ITT) tutors and trainees.

The practical tools provided here are designed to promote and support discussion between tutors involved in initial teacher training (ITT) and ITT trainees in developing inclusive teaching and learning for all pupils. They are all linked to the professional standards for qualified teacher status (QTS) and comprise:

A user guide (PDF, 989KB) giving further details of the tools provided in the training resource and how they can be used – this should be read first

The pillars of inclusion (PDF, 506KB) – a table grouping different teaching approaches into eight themes, or 'pillars of inclusion', to help trainees and those who work with them to consider and discuss inclusive practice

Film clips for each of the pillars illustrating aspects of effective inclusive classroom practice and interviews with experienced professionals (primary and secondary phases)

School self-audit tool (PDF, 577KB) – enables school leaders (including special educational needs coordinators (SENCOs) and inclusion managers) to consider the provision their school makes to support trainees in teaching pupils with SEN and/or disabilities

Lesson observation tool with discussion prompts (PDF, 715KB) – can be used by tutors, mentors and other staff when observing and feeding back on trainees’ practice in inclusive teaching. It can be used to record strengths, areas for development and action points

Activity 1: Preparing lessons (PDF, 707KB) – in which trainees consider an outline of a lesson and a description of a pupil with SEN and/or disabilities, and develop ideas to make sure the pupil is included in the lesson

Activity 2: School systems for tracking pupils' progress (PDF, 528KB) – in which trainees find out about the school’s systems for tracking the outcomes achieved by pupils with SEN and/or disabilities and evaluating the impact of interventions

These tools can be used in conjunction with TDA SEN and disability self-study tasks and subject booklets developed for PGCE and other one year ITT programmes. The self-study tasks and subject booklets will be helpful to trainees in developing a better understanding of SEN and disability. There is also a list of these in annex 4 of the user guide (PDF, 989KB).
