The Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL) is a practice-based masters programme designed to help teachers gain the knowledge and skills they need to have a real impact in the classroom. It brings together the best aspects of professional development from the world's top performing education systems.
In his remit letter to the TDA (March 2011) following the publication of the White paper ‘The Importance of Teaching’ (24 November 2010), the Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove, announced that, in future, there would be no central Government funding for Postgraduate study programmes, including MTL. Therefore, only those teachers already studying for the MTL are now being funded to complete the programme.
MTL programmes are now established as part of the portfolio of M level qualifications in the 52 universities that have validated this school-based masters qualification. Teachers wishing to study an MTL programme should contact their local higher education institution (HEI) to find out whether MTL is one of their postgraduate programmes for serving teachers
MTL providers will be able to supply information on the support and resources available for this and all other professional development programmes for teachers which they run.
