Standards and guidance
Towards the end of each term of your induction period you should meet your induction tutor and/or headteacher/principal for a formal assessment. The main focus is your progress towards meeting the core standards.
After each of the first two meetings, the headteacher/principal should make a report to the local authority (LA) or, where appropriate, the Independent Schools Council teacher induction panel (ISCtip). This should record your progress towards meeting the core standards at the end of induction.
Meeting the standards
After the assessment meeting towards the end of the third term, your headteacher/principal will make a recommendation to the LA/ISCtip about whether you have met the core standards. The LA/ISCtip will decide whether you have met the requirements for satisfactory completion of the induction period, and pass their decision to the General Teaching Council for England (GTCE). The GTCE will then let you know whether, or not, you have passed your induction – if you have passed, they will issue a certificate.
The TDA has created guidance to help NQTs understand the assessment process during induction, the standards they need to meet and how these relate to their development.
The Department for Education induction assessment forms can be accessed on the DfE website.
The statutory regulations
The statutory guidance (PDF, 317KB) on induction for NQTs provide a clear, up-to-date definition of the induction period and information on its completion, including roles and responsibilities, assessment and appeals.
The regulations came into effect in September 2008, updating the previous version to:
- enable further education institutions to host induction for NQTs who have been awarded qualified teacher status, provided the institutions comply with the requirements in regualtions and guidance.
- allow the appropriate body to shorten the induction period in certain circumstances (as outlined in the regulations) by up to 29 days, taking into account of any absences
- allow the General Teaching Council for England (GTCE) one extra day to communicate a decision on an appeal
- remove the historic requirement to complete induction within five years of starting the induction period
