Roles and responsibilities

These pages set out the roles and responsibilities of everyone involved in the induction process. Here you can find out what is expected at every stage, from the end of initial teacher training (ITT) to the completion of induction.

Trainee teachers: when you have gained qualified teacher status (QTS), you will start induction. You will be actively engaged with your tutors and mentors at transition point one.

Newly qualified teachers (NQTs): must play an active role in all aspects of their induction programme. You will plan your induction with your induction tutor, and discuss priorities, progress and aspirations at transition points two three.

Initial teacher training tutors: must familiarise trainees with induction arrangements and introduce them to the career entry and development profile. You will support trainees in recording responses at transition point one and sign to confirm individual discussion with each trainee at transition point one.

Induction tutors: have day-to-day responsibility for monitoring, supporting and assessing NQTs. You will work with NQTs on transition points two and three, and can refer to their responses at transition point one.

Headteachers/principals: must ensure each NQT has an appropriate induction programme and make a recommendation to the local authority on whether the NQT has met the core standards.

Local authorities: must ensure schools monitor and assess NQTs and decide, based headteacher/principal recommendation, if an NQT has satisfactorily completed induction – and communicate this decision to those involved.

Overseas trained teachers: can choose to be assessed against the core standards at the same time as QTS standards, if they choose not to, or do not meet these standards they will undertake induction like any other NQT.
