CPD in practice: CPD for school staff

Chawson First: continuing professional development for school staff

Interviewee:  Gerry Hughes

Chawson First School is in Droitwich, Worcestershire, it has 438 children between the ages of five and eight.

The school introduced portfolios and devised a simple, but effective, new way of communicating continuing professional development (CPD) activity to the staff. The key to the success of both was the emphasis on the individual – the personal approach to CPD.

What the school learnt

The school found that a personal approach was the most effective way to promote CPD, whether it was persuading staff of the value of portfolios or demonstrating the range of CPD activities which could address the school improvement plan.
