CPD in practice: Ralph Sadleir Middle School

Ralph Sadleir Middle School: changing the culture

Ralph Sadleir Middle School is in Ware, Hertfordshire and has 332 pupils aged 9-13. The school decided the key to helping staff recognise the value of continuing professional development (CPD) was through performance management and development reviews.

What the school learnt

The school found that performance management and development reviews opened career doors for all staff. Three teaching assistants were promoted and one established her own business. The review process also changed their view of CPD. Once a person had established their personal targets for professional development, they were much more likely to see CPD, which would help them to achieve the targets, as relevant and useful.
