Whitehall Primary School: professional development for teaching assistants

Interviewee  Jill Connell
Happier, more confident and more effective teaching assistants who achieved important career progressions: an initiative to provide them with high quality continuing professional development (CPD) has been a “huge success”. The Whitehill Primary School in Stockport has 170 pupils, nine teachers, ten teaching assistants and one higher level teaching assistant.

What the school learnt

The school has found that teaching assistants can contribute more effectively if they are given good opportunities for professional development. It also identified what an important source of support the local authority could be. Although the school designed and organised all the CPD events, it was the local authority that provided the speakers, facilities and materials.
