Early professional development (EPD) makes a difference to your teaching practice, preparing you for your career ahead and benefiting learners and the school in which you work.
Research suggests that there are clear benefits to teachers and schools of ensuring that teachers start their careers with proper support.

Unlike during induction, teachers in their second and third years of teaching have no statutory or contractual entitlements for release time to do continuing professional development (CPD).
Research into the benefits of EPD
Studies into EPD were conducted by the National Foundation for Educational Research, Ofsted and the Evidence for Policy and Practice Information and Co-ordinating Centre between 2003 and 2005. These revealed that some of the benefits of EPD to you and your school are:
- improving the quality of your teaching and your confidence as a practitioner
- increasing your focus and understanding of your career development
- increasing the contributions you make as a second and third year teacher to the work of your school and colleagues, and
- broadening your pedagogical skills and increasing your reflection on your classroom practice.
