How do I apply for a postgraduate professional development (PPD) course?

PPD courses are available across England, provided by partnerships of universities, higher education colleges, local authorities and schools. Find out which providers run courses in your area.

It is best to contact your local provider directly to find out how they can meet your needs and discuss the courses available.

Your local provider can also give you more information about the level of their fees. The TDA subsidises course providers, so you can benefit from reduced course fees.

You must apply to your local provider directly. Some providers may ask your school for a commitment to support you in your continuing professional development (CPD), so it will help if you have spoken to your headteacher or CPD coordinator about PPD as part of your performance management planning and review meetings.

How can I get funding for a course?

The government has given most funds for teachers’ CPD to schools’ budgets, so TDA are unable to fund teachers directly. Speak to your headteacher or CPD coordinator about accessing the school CPD budget for additional financial support.

Local authorities may also have funds to support teachers’ training and development, and some PPD providers have access to their university’s scholarship or bursary systems.

Am I eligible to apply?

All teachers with qualified teacher status, including newly qualified teachers (NQTs), are eligible to apply for courses funded through the PPD programme.

There is a requirement for a first degree, but individual providers may be able to make exceptions in some cases. Contact your local course provider for more details.

TDA cannot fund courses for teachers who are employed in schools in Wales or Scotland.
