High quality information, advice and guidance (IAG) assists young people in making the right choices about their education, employment and training opportunities. It also makes a major contribution to their personal development, helping them to prepare for future learning and employment opportunities.
Research by the National Foundation for Education Research,
The Case for Careers Education and Guidance for 14-19 year olds (Word, 103 KB), demonstrates that young people with effective career exploration skills – who are aware of their strengths and weaknesses and have the ability to apply their skills – make more successful transitions at 16. Good quality IAG boosts student achievement and reduces drop-out rates and course switching. It also assist students in establishing career goals, reviewing career decisions, and identifying barriers to progress and ways to overcome them. Your students will need to develop a range of skills to help them cope with changing employment patterns and new technologies. Appropriate IAG can help with:
- raising aspirations and increasing motivation
- making appropriate decisions
- relating knowledge and skills from a range of areas to future opportunities in learning and work
- developing reflective skills, reviewing achievements and setting targets
- overcoming false or stereotypical attitudes about career choices
- adapting to change and managing transition
