The golden hello is a financial incentive package for teachers of priority subjects in secondary state-maintained schools. It is only available to teachers who train through a postgraduate initial teacher training (ITT) course leading to qualified teacher status (QTS). The standard deadline for teachers to apply for golden hello is 12 months after completing their induction year.
Golden hello application form
Eligible teachers should be given the golden hello application form by their ITT providers. Part 2 of this form must be signed and stamped by the ITT provider.
If you have not received the golden hello application form, or need another copy, you will need to contact your ITT provider.
Eligibility
- The applicant must hold QTS. Teachers must apply within 12 months of successfully completing their induction year.
- Eligible teachers must be employed by a local authority or school to teach in a secondary maintained school, a secondary maintained or non-maintained special school or an academy in England. Supply teachers employed by private agencies are not eligible.
- Teachers must be employed to teach the subject for which they trained. To see the eligible subjects, refer to the eligibility guidance available for download from this page.
Golden hello payments vary between £2,500 and £5,000 according to the subject and year in which a teacher started their postgraduate training. Eligible teachers should apply to their local authority, which will then make the payments if the application is successful. Funding arrangements from 1 August 2008
For trainees starting secondary postgraduate English, dance and drama ITT courses after 1 August 2008, the bursary will be reduced from £9,000 to £6,000. Trainees on these courses will not be eligible to receive a golden hello.
