Golden hello

The golden hello is a financial incentive package for teachers of priority subjects in secondary state-maintained schools. It is only available to teachers who train through a postgraduate initial teacher training (ITT) course leading to qualified teacher status (QTS). You can download eligibility guidance from this page for further information.

The standard deadline for teachers to apply for a golden hello is 12 months after completing their induction year.

Golden hello application form

ITT providers should give eligible teachers the golden hello application form; part two of the form must be signed and stamped by the ITT provider.

If you have not received the golden hello application form, or need another copy, you will need to contact your ITT provider.

Eligibility

  • The applicant must hold QTS; teachers must apply within 12 months of successfully completing their induction year
  • Teachers must be employed to teach the subject for which they trained. To see the eligible subjects, refer to the eligibility guidance available for download from this page
  • Golden hello payments vary between £2,500 and £5,000 according to the subject and year in which a teacher started their postgraduate training; eligible teachers should apply to their local authority, which will make the payments if the application is successful – for full details on eligibility and rates please see the eligibility guidance
