Core standards

The induction standards, known as core standards, apply to all newly qualified teachers (NQTs) starting induction from September 2007.

The professional standards help to guide teachers' professional development and choices throughout their careers.

Core standards were introduced in September 2007. NQTs who were part way through their induction when the core standards were introduced can choose to be assessed against the 2003 induction standards until 31 December 2007. From 1 January 2008, all NQTs will be assessed against the core standards.

All NQTs who start their induction from September 2007 will be assessed against the core standards

NQTs who completed their induction before September 2007 will be assessed against the 2003 induction standards

Supporting the induction process: guidance for newly qualified teachers

We have produced some guidance to help teachers:

  • review progress on how they are meeting the standards, and
  • identify professional development needs and priorities, including what further experience, monitoring and support would be helpful.

The guidance is arranged in themes, grouping together the standards that have a natural relationship. You can access the guidance from the professional standards themselves, or by following the links below:

You can also download all the guidance in one document: Supporting the Induction Process: TDA Guidance for Newly Qualified Teachers (PDF, 3 MB)
