As a refugee teacher you will have valuable experience and language skills, and be able to support a diverse pupil population. Refugee teachers can help schools and local authorities create a learning environment that meets the different needs of individuals and groups of pupils.
The Refugees into Teaching (RiT) project is funded by the TDA and led by the charity, Refugee Council. By registering with the project you can benefit from the following services:
- Specialist advice and guidance: RiT advisers assess your needs and develop a personalised plan for achieving your goals. They help you to understand the English state schooling system; provide you with advice about your options for retraining and accessing employment; and ensure that you receive the support you need.
- Mentoring: The RiT mentoring scheme will match you with someone currently teaching in the English schooling system who can offer you one-to-one advice and support.
- Work with schools and training providers: They work across the country talking to schools, local authorities and teacher training providers to create partnerships that can help you access training courses, paid jobs and voluntary work experience opportunities.
- Website: The RiT website is an excellent source of information on understanding and accessing the teaching system. You can search for training opportunities in your area and register with the project to take advantage of their individualised support.
- National Teachers Database: Registering on the RiT database will ensure you continue to receive the project’s support. RiT advisers can track your progress, provide you with specialised support as and when you need it and offer you referrals to other organisations to ensure you receive the best possible support.
- Overseas qualifications: Working with UK NARIC (National Recognition Information Centre for the UK), the RiT project offers you the opportunity to obtain free comparisons of your qualifications. NARIC is the National Agency responsible for providing information, advice and expert opinion on professional skills and qualifications from over 180 countries worldwide. RiT works closely with NARIC on your behalf to provide information about the equivalency of your overseas qualifications against the UK's national qualifications frameworks.
- Training and events: ‘Refugees into Teaching’ organises conferences, events and training workshops to help you improve your knowledge, answer your questions and enable you to meet organisations and employers.
The RiT project has a national focus and aims to support people across the country. Over 550 teachers have registered with the project.
