Teaching in England

Overseas trained teachers (OTTs) are a feature of schools in England, particularly schools in London, other large cities and the south-east. Most schools welcome the fresh perspectives that OTTs bring to the teaching staff, their professionalism and the opportunity for students to meet someone with a different life experience.

But anyone wishing to work as a qualified teacher in maintained schools in England must have qualified teacher status (QTS). The Government encourages OTTs to gain QTS in England. Benefits include a higher salary and the opportunity to apply for permanent, longer term and promoted posts (subject to any visa regulations).

The TDA funds the Overseas Trained Teacher Programme (OTTP), designed to help you meet the standards for QTS. More information on OTTP can be found on theĀ Overseas Trained Teacher Programme page or by contacting the OTTP advice line on 0845 6000 991 or by e-mail at ott@recruit.tda.gov.uk
