Planning meeting

The planning meeting, ideally including the review meeting section, is the central part of the performance management process.

The planning meeting is where your reviewer and you will focus on your priorities for the next cycle and set objectives to reflect these. Arrangements for classroom observation and other evidence will be discussed, together with its focus. You will agree what support is necessary in helping you to reach your objectives plus any other training and development that you may require over the year. You will also agree the evidence and the performance criteria to be used to review your performance. Finally, the timescales for achieving your objectives will be set and agreed upon between both parties.

To get a better understanding of the benefits, you are advised to read the relevant sections in the revised performance management regulations and RIG’s guidance (see links in the downloads column).

Changes at a glance

Previous position

  • Objectives - the sole requirement of the planning meeting was for objectives to be set with no clear expectations for teachers/headteachers
  • Other issues may be raised and considered at any stage after the planning meeting

New position

  • Objectives: objectives need to contribute in some way to school improvement and pupil progress
  • Classroom observation and focus: limit of 3 hours in any one cycle and its focus and purpose agreed beforehand
  • Other evidence: must be provided by someone with direct professional knowledge of your work
  • CPD/support: will be discussed and agreed upon in reference to how it meets the performance criteria
  • Performance criteria - these will also be agreed upon by both parties, taking into account job description, professional standards, reasonable expectations and, where eligible, pay progression criteria
  • Timescales: the timescales for achieving the objectives will be set and agreed upon during the planning stage
