Course length

Returners courses last between six and 12 weeks. They include both tuition and a school placement. Courses are full or part-time and are available around the country.

Course content

The course will update you on the national curriculum, key national strategies, pupil assessment and behaviour management. A course may also cover areas like job hunting, interview skills and preparing your CV.

Primary, secondary, and joint phase courses

Courses may specialise in early years, primary or secondary. Joint phase courses cover areas relating to both the primary and secondary curriculum, plus phase-specific sessions.

Generally, joint phase courses are not suitable for people wanting to convert from one phase to another.

The type of school you visit on your school placement will depend on whether you enrolled on the course as a primary or secondary candidate.

The school placement

A supported school placement, lasting at least 10 days, is also included in the course. This will give you the chance to interact with children in the classroom and refresh your teaching skills in a supported environment.

 quotes

The school where I did my placement offered me a job. That was a real confidence booster.
− Emma Colwill

 quotes

All participants will receive a carefully planned and supported school experience, which may be undertaken at more than one school.

The first-hand experience gained on a school placement will boost your confidence and increase your readiness to return to the classroom. You will have the opportunity to experience teaching again, and to talk to teachers and children.

Taster days

When deciding to return to teaching it might be useful to get some current classroom experience. Contact your local authority or a school near you to find out how.
