Popular questions on the ICT test

The user interface for the ICT skills test has been specially designed to contain the features common to Microsoft Windows-based and Apple Mac operating systems. The ICT test has not, however, been designed to mimic the overall appearance of commonly used software packages but to include similar functionality and usability. This means the test environment should be familiar to most users but not an exact copy of commercially available software. You will be able to transfer all of the skills acquired on your own computer and apply them to the test environment.

It is important to note that the test environment applications may not contain some features that are specific to a particular brand of software. For example, keyboard shortcuts and right mouse clicks are not available in the live tests. Also, each application window allows only one file at a time to be open however you are able to open multiple application windows. You should make the most of the interactive benchmark and practice tests to familiarise yourself with the test environment.

You will be assessed on your ability to carry out the tasks in an efficient way. There may be more than one way of performing a task and you need to make the most efficient and effective use of the ICT tools available.

When undertaking a task you will not receive feedback about the way you have chosen to carry it out. However, the software applications within the test operate in the same way as most commercially available applications and, where appropriate, will display error messages warning you that you are unable to carry out a certain procedure.

There is a 'restart task' button that allows you to start the whole task again. However, if you choose this option all the work you have done on that task will be lost. An option is available at the end of the test to review all of the questions through once and amend your answers.

You can use the ‘Next’ button to move onto the next task. An option is available at the end of the test to review all of the questions through once and amend your answers.

No, it tests you on your ability to use the tools and facilities within ICT.

You will be marked on everything you have attempted within the test; there will be no marking penalty for not completing the test or any section within it.
