Popular questions on the literacy test

The questions are presented in sections as follows:

  1. Spelling
  2. Punctuation
  3. Comprehension
  4. Grammar

You must attempt the spelling questions first, although you can answer questions within the spelling section in any order you wish. When you have completed and submitted your answers to the spelling section, you will not be able to return to that section. You will then be free to complete the remaining sections and test questions in any order.

Yes. For the audio spelling questions you can type in an alternative answer. Also, you can use the 'delete' key to delete words or individual letters.

In the grammar and comprehension sections, you can drag an answer back to the place holder before selecting an alternative choice.

Obviously you will only be marked on those questions which you have attempted and so will not be able to achieve the maximum score. However, there is no additional penalty for not completing the test.

No, you must take a complete test of spelling, punctuation, comprehension and grammar during the same test session. You may not, for example, take spelling and punctuation one day, and return to do comprehension and grammar on another day.

You are not required to demonstrate explicit knowledge of specialised grammatical terms, nor are you tested on your ability to analyse language formally or identify linguistic units. The sample questions in the support material demonstrate the elements which will be tested.

No, the testing of comprehension will be based on 'unseen' texts. However, the passages are drawn from a wide cross-section of the kinds of educational writing teachers typically encounter in the course of their professional reading. You will have become familiar with such sources in the course of your professional training.
