You will be provided with a whiteboard and pen prior to your test. The use of a calculator is not permitted for the mental arithmetic part of the test. The on-screen calculator is available for the remainder of the test. You cannot use your own calculator during the test.

You must attempt the mental arithmetic questions first. These questions are presented in a predetermined order. Once you have submitted your answers to the mental arithmetic questions, you can complete the on-screen questions in any order. You cannot go back to the mental arithmetic part of the test but you can review the answers to the on-screen questions.

Yes, you can delete the answer for the mental arithmetic question by using the backspace key and typing a different answer. You will only be able to change the answer within the time allocated for each mental arithmetic question. You can also change your answers for the on-screen questions by using the ‘review’ function or by using the ‘previous’ and ‘next’ buttons to move from one question to another and amending the answers.

An onscreen timer is available which shows the amount of time remaining.

The QTS skills test in numeracy is intended to ensure that everyone qualifying to teach has a good grounding in the use of numeracy in the wider context of their professional role as a teacher. The numeracy skills tested in the numeracy test do not assess the broader range of mathematical knowledge required by those training to teach mathematics. The numeracy skills tested are relevant to all teachers.
