On-screen questions

The on-screen questions will test your ability to use and interpret relevant information from different sources. They may draw on graphs (box and whisker, scatter graphs, cumulative frequency graphs), charts (bar charts, pie charts), and tables (representing pupil numbers, test results, reading ages).

An on-screen calculator is provided.

The on-screen questions come in different formats:

  • Multiple choice: choose the correct answer from a fixed number of given answers.
  • Multiple response: choose one or more correct statements from a number of given statements.
  • Single response: type the answer in the answer box. (Note: avoid inserting spaces in answers).
  • Drag and drop: choose the answer from a number of alternative answers, by dragging and dropping it within the answer box provided. To change an answer, drag it back to the original position and select an alternative.
  • Point and click: select an answer by pointing and clicking on the correct area of the table or graph. To change an answer, click on an alternative area of the table or graph.

The following advice might be helpful before sitting your numeracy skills test.

  • Try not to spend more than two minutes on any one question and keep an eye on the time remaining. One strategy to maximise the number of marks you pick up is to answer those questions you find easiest first. You can return to any you still need to complete at the end of the test and insert an answer. Try not to leave any answers blank at the end of the test.
  • Ensure that statements are read carefully. For example, the question may have asked for percentage of pupils who achieved level 4 and above. Don’t just look at level 4; remember to also include those who achieved level 5, level 6, and so on.
  • Check that you are giving the correct information. Tables may give you details of the number of marks a pupil achieved but the question may be asking for a percentage score.
