Initial teacher training (ITT) funding and allocations

The Training and Development Agency for schools (TDA) is responsible for allocating and funding teacher training places in line with the needs of the sector, and national targets set by the Department for Education (DfE).

If training providers have any enquiries regarding allocations please liaise with your Regional Lead (RL) for more information.

Mainstream provision
The TDA accredits institutions to deliver mainstream initial teacher training (ITT) courses, which consist of undergraduate and postgraduate routes leading to qualified teacher status (QTS). The mainstream ITT route is delivered by higher education institutions (HEIs) and school-based initial teacher training (SCITT) providers.
Employment-based training (EBITT) provision
Employment-based initial teacher training (EBITT) comprises training programmes that allow trainees to work in a school and follow an individual training programme designed to enable them meet the Secretary of State's standards for the award of qualified teacher status (QTS). Trainees must be employed by a school and work towards QTS, all at the same time.
Subject knowledge enhancement provision
Subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) courses are pre-initial teacher training (ITT) courses. They are designed to help potential trainees gain the depth of knowledge in their chosen subject they will need to train to teach.
Training bursaries
The training bursary is a financial incentive to attract and retain high-quality graduates into the teaching profession

Financial requirements
Initial teacher training (ITT) providers that receive TDA funding are bound by the terms of the TDA's financial memorandum, which states the terms and conditions under which payment is made. Providers that receive TDA funding are subject to monitoring and auditing.
Golden hellos
The Department for Education (DfE) has announced the closure of the Golden Hello Scheme for all trainees starting their initial teacher training (ITT) in the academic year 2011/12 and beyond.

Trainees who started their postgraduate ITT course before 1 August 2011 will continue to be able to make their application for the Golden Hello Scheme under the current terms and conditions.
