Skills tests

Trainee teachers must pass the skills tests before they can be awarded qualified teacher status (QTS). For more about professional knowledge and understanding literacy, numeracy and information and communication technology (ICT), view QTS standard Q17.

The latest skills tests report provides a summary of the test results in numeracy, literacy and ICT for the academic year 2009/10. The tests are designed to make sure all trainees have the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to carry out their professional roles as teachers effectively.

34,436 trainee teachers passed all three tests required to meet the standard between 1 September 2009 and 31 August 2010.

Institution specific results

Providers of initial teacher training (ITT) with more than five trainees in 2009/10 can access reports on the skills tests results of their own trainee cohorts via the providers' analysis website. They will also be able to access other providers' data. This data can be used to benchmark their trainees' performance against the national picture and also be taken into account when planning provision and support for trainees.

Notes on data tables

Figures are shown for the results of ITT trainees who were due to complete their initial teacher training in the academic year 2009/10 and who sat the QTS skills tests between 1 September 2009 and 31 August 2010.

Trainees who did not pass the QTS skills tests during the academic year 2009/10 have unlimited opportunities to continue to take and pass the skills tests. As a result, totals for different categories in the data tables may vary as not all fields were mandatory at registration.

Trainees requiring special arrangements (including those for whom English is an additional language) were given the opportunity to take an adapted test rather than the standard test. In total, special arrangements were requested by 8.2 per cent of trainees, which is a slight increase in comparison to those making similar requests in 2008/09 (when it was 6.6 per cent).
